Week 0 has come and gone, and it was glorious! (Unless you’re a Seminole, I guess). The biggest takeaway is that all four dogs covered the spread, with one outright win. Below, Matt and Andy share their thoughts on the games to get you through the next four days without football
GT 24, FSU 21
Matt: Georgia Tech continues their role as spoiler from 2023. After the first drive, Georgia Tech continued to run blitz with great success knowing that FSU was hellbent on running the ball. Possession was everything in this slow-paced game. Haynes King made 2 huge throws with the game on the line to get his team in position for a game-winning field goal. Georgia Tech looks better than I thought, and FSU’s linebackers look suspect at best.
Andy: I felt great about laying the points with FSU for exactly one drive. They drove down the field with authority, never even reaching 3rd down. But then GT did the same thing. This was really a tale of two quarterbacks. Haynes King seemed to elevate his team (despite a few mishaps with ball security), while DJU seemed to drag his team down. He had two nice completions on 4th downs in the 4th quarter, but he looked downright bad on every throw longer than 2 yards prior to that. If FSU wants to do anything this year, he’s going to have to step it way up.
(P.S. What are the chances of having two Hayneses on the same team, let alone in the same backfield? Maybe I’m a nerd, but I kept thinking of Jeopardy’s Before and After: What is Jamal Haynes King, Alex?)
Montana State 35, New Mexico 31
Matt: New Mexico jumped out to a giant first quarter lead and tried to step on the throat of a solid FCS team. Down 31-14 in the 4th quarter, Montana State stormed back to score the final 21 points of the game and seal the win. Bronco Mendenhall has to be frustrated with the defensive effort towards the end, but stock is up for a Lobos team picked to finish tied for last in the Mountain West.
Andy: I thought the scoreboard lied for most of this game. Montana State had more yards throughout the entire game. New Mexico was buoyed by two scoop-and-scores, as well as numerous penalties on Montana State. I’m happy for Montana State, but I really wish New Mexico had pulled off the blowout, so I could look to fade them hard going forward.
SMU 29, Nevada 24
Matt: Nevada and SMU traded scores until late in the 3rd quarter when the Wolfpack jumped out to an 11-point lead going into the 4th. Rhett Lashlee remembered he had a 6’4’’ wide receiver in RJ Maryland and continued to feed him in the crucial moments of the game. With 1 minute left on the clock, Preston Stone found Maryland streaking down the sideline for a 34-yard gem to take the lead. SMU had a rough go, but pulled out the win in their first game as a member of the ACC.
Andy: Nevada lost, but covered easily, which is exactly what they did for me most of last year and it’s why I love them. Needed one more score to get the over, but after starting with a scoreless 14 minutes, that’s closer than I thought we’d get. SMU is going to need to step it up if they want to make a splash in their inaugural ACC year, and Nevada can make some noise in the MW if they keep playing like that.
Hawaii 35, Delaware State 14
Matt: Honestly, I did not watch this game. I know that Delaware State covered and the under was the play. If you paid to watch this game, you are sicker than me lol.
Andy: I was leaning DSU early in the week and the boys talked me out of making it an official play. But when the number hit 40, I couldn’t help myself. I did watch the first half and didn’t have to pay for it, but I did have to download some random app and watch it on my phone. DSU really struggled to move the ball, which wasn’t a surprise, but so did Hawaii, which was. They’re really going to need to get the timing right if they want to Run n’ Shoot through the MW. When it went to halftime at 14-7, my +40 felt pretty safe and I went to bed.
